How much data is generated every day?
Counting the data that crosses the internet, about 24 million terabytes a day in 2025. The ITU estimates that fixed broadband carried 7.3 zettabytes over the year and mobile broadband 1.5 zettabytes.[1] This page adds the two, 8.8 zettabytes, and divides by 365 days.
That's internet traffic, not all the data created. Figures quoted for all the data created, stored or copied measure something else, and this page doesn't use them.
How much traffic goes over fixed and mobile networks?
Fixed broadband carried 7.3 zettabytes in 2025, almost five times the 1.5 zettabytes on mobile broadband. Fixed traffic rose from 6.2 zettabytes in 2024. Phones and other devices on Wi-Fi count as fixed broadband traffic.[1]

Mobile traffic is growing faster: by 19% a year on average since 2021, against 16% for fixed broadband.[1]
How much data does a mobile subscription use?
15.3 GB a month on average worldwide in 2025. Subscriptions in high-income countries used 17.9 GB, about eight times the 2.2 GB in low-income countries. By region, the CIS had the highest average at 22 GB and Africa 5.2 GB.[1]

Methodology
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) collects fixed and mobile broadband traffic from national regulators and ministries each year, and fills the gaps from operator reports or its own models based on subscriptions, download speeds and income. Its figures cover end-user traffic over the open internet within each country, and leave out closed services and IPTV. Traffic from a mobile device on Wi-Fi counts as fixed broadband. The 2025 figures are estimates, extrapolated from quarterly traffic where countries publish it and modelled elsewhere. The ITU notes that few operators publish traffic statistics and that its traffic models predict less well than those for its other indicators, so treat the totals as approximate.
The daily figure is this page's own: the ITU's fixed and mobile totals for 2025 added together and divided by 365. One zettabyte is a billion terabytes. The ITU rounds each total to one decimal, so the daily figure could be anywhere from about 23.8 to 24.4 million terabytes; the CSV keeps one decimal, 24.1.
